FRILLY PINK ANGEL’S TRUMPET
Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’
Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ bears huge, frilly edged, watermelon pink trumpets with white throats, and long petal tips which curl up like pagodas. Each trumpet can be up to 20cm. long, and an established shrub can bears hundreds at once.
Spectacular frilly pink trumpets like pagodas
It is adorned with these spectacular dangling trumpets during all the warmer months and has continuous blooming through from mid-spring on through summer and autumn.
Sweet scent especially at night
The trumpets are sweetly scented, particularly as the light dims and overnight. So it is a wonderful shrub to plant near a bedroom window or a deck where you can
Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ is one of the most spectacular of tall shrubs or small trees for any size garden, or in large pots.
GROWING: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’
Height with flowers: Upright shrub to 3m. high approx. often with multi-trunks, depending on conditions.
Width: 1.5m. to 2m. approx.
Growth: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ grows as an upright, often multi-trunked tall shrub or small tree.
It is very accepting of pruning, and so can be pruned hard to shape or shorten as you wish.
It is evergreen in sub-tropical and tropical areas or in a frost free protected area. However, it will lose its leaves in colder climates. If cut back by frost it can re-grow from protected root stock.
Bloom season: Spectacular, dangling trumpet blooms from mid-spring on and through summer and autumn.
Position: A position in morning sun with afternoon shade, or partial shade through the day is optimum, especially in hotter areas. However in cooler areas a full sun position is appreciated.
Brugmansia bushes are particularly happy where they have some overhead shelter – which can be from nearby trees or buildings.
Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ is well suited to growing along a fence or edge, because of its upright habit.
Can be used to make an informal hedge or screen, and is an excellent choice for coastal and seaside gardens which are frost free.
Soil: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ is very easily grown in a wide variety of soils, wherever it is sheltered from frost. Tolerates soils from sandy to clay based, including good garden loam. However it thrives with the addition of compost, aged manure and humus rich material, and will reward with even more abundant flowering.
Brugmansia prefer a slightly acidic soil pH and good drainage - so they are not suitable for waterlogged positions.
Frost: Protect from frost and strong wind.
Water: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ will thrive on average garden watering. Water more frequently during hotter periods and allow to dry out more during winter. Water deeply rather than frequently to encourage deep roots. If growing in pots, then allow to dry between watering, then water deeply.
Pots: Can be grown permanently and very successfully in a large pot and trimmed or pruned to a desired shape if needed
Bees & Birds: The spectacular trumpets of Brugmansia are believed to be pollinated by night flying moths. However, the trumpets are also enjoyed during the day by bees and nectar gathering birds.
Care & Maintenance: Easy care, low maintenance shrub. Pruning is not essential unless you wish to change the shape.
You can prune to a single trunk or cut back to encourage multiple trunks.
Fertilizer: Quality fertilizer such as Powerfeed can be applied in spring and autumn. Old manure and compost can be added as often as available.
We also recommend to water in with Seasol at planting.
Pruning: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ responds well to pruning and can be cut back hard if necessary.
Brugmansia shrubs also look very appealing when pruned to an umbrella shape with lower growth and branches pruned off completely to reveal the structure of the trunks and display the dangling trumpets
Pests & Diseases: Rarely troubled by any pests or diseases.
Deer & Rabbit resistant: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ is rarely if ever troubled by rabbits and deer.
CAUTION: All parts of Brugmansia plants are toxic if eaten.
Quarantine Restriction: Brugmansia versicolor ‘Frilly Pink’ can be shipped to all states except Tasmania (Not permitted entry into TAS)
