Hosta ‘Great Expectations’
Hosta ‘Great Expectations’ lives up to all expectations with foliage of exceptional quality.
Leaves are very large, puckered, and pleated with a waxy sheen.
They have great colour interest through the seasons, with the centre of each leaf commencing lime, transitioning through cream, to finally white by mid-summer.
While the edges are broadly laced and stitched with blue-green and emerald.
Stately spires of palest mauve-cream trumpets are a summer bonus.
Hosta ‘Great Expectations’ makes a showy, substantial clump of symmetrically arranged foliage in full to deep shade (or perhaps just a little morning sun).
Superb in either garden or pot.
Foliage clump 45cm. high x 75cm. wide. Summer flower spires 60cm. tall.
Frost hardy, long lived, deciduous perennial clump, giving pleasure in spring, summer and autumn with foliage colour, plus summer flower interest.
The waxy leaves of Hosta ‘Great Expectations’ are also more slug and snail resistant.
Foliage and flowers are both excellent for floristry and vases.
Designer style & tough in the dry
Hosta have exploded in popularity recently, as the “must have” hardy solution for gardener designers challenged by shade.
The reputation of Hosta for being able to survive periods of dry, has soared during recent drought years.
So once Hosta are established in the shade, they are certainly not “water-guzzlers” and have good dry-hardiness.
Do not despair - slugs & snails can be defeated
Many gardeners are put off growing Hosta, fearing they will be devoured by snails.
But there are some easy and simple solutions to the slug and snail problem, and timing is all.
Hosta are most susceptible to chew marks when the new, furled young leaves are emerging after winter.
So applications in late winter, early spring, and again in mid spring, of whichever snail slaying, deterrent method you favour, will mean you have beautiful Hosta leaves to enjoy till the end of autumn.
