Tough little Ajugas make thick matting groundcover, suppressing weeds and carpeting the ground so very prettily.
And also helping to keep the soil cool and reducing evaporation with their ground-hugging foliage.
Many have wonderfully coloured leaves, providing an excellent contrast to all the other green plants all year round, and making a lovely frame for colourful roses or other flowers above.
Though small in stature (they do hug the ground), when Ajugas flower they really know how to put on a show.
So, when the stout spikes of bugle flowers appear in spring-early summer, Ajugas make a very fetching mass of flower colour indeed. Then there are generally some bonus flower repeats again in autumn.
But there is always the flat mat of glossy, handsome foliage all year round.
So, weave together a Persian carpet of Ajugas using our specially selected and colour co-ordinated packs.
WHITE CARPET BUGLE FLOWER - Ajuga reptans ‘White Elf’
True baby-white flowers in stout, close packed spikes spikes, standing 15cm. above glossy, bright green foliage.
Very low to the ground, and a dense, weed suppressing groundcover. Lovely under pink or white roses, or in a container.
Makes a round carpet to a diameter of approximately 30-50cm.
BLACK AND BLUE BUGLE FLOWER - Ajuga reptans ‘Black Mary’
Rich blue spires, over glossy dark leaves that are so chocolatey dark they are almost black.
So, it provides an excellent contrast to all the other green foliage plants all year round, plus dense, weed suppressing groundcover.
And then gives a spectacular burst of blue when it mass blooms, but the glossy, almost black foliage is the perfect foil for other flowers of any colour. 15cm high in flower x round carpet to a diameter of approximately 30-50cm.
SILVER CARPET BUGLE FLOWER - Ajuga reptans ‘Silver Carpet’
‘Silver Carpet’ sparkles as a groundcover, particularly in shaded areas. Because each soft sage green leaf is broadly rimmed with pale silver.
So, the pretty foliage lights up any dull spot all year round and forms a weed suppressing mat.
Then soft-blue, 15cm. flower spires come in masses, perfectly complementing the prettily coloured foliage carpet. But really the tight-knit, perfectly flat, dense foliage carpet, is reason enough to grow Ajuga reptans ‘Silver Carpet’.
And ‘Silver Carpet’ is one of the lowest and tightest growing of all the Ajuga reptans cultivars.
So use it as a groundcover amongst trees and shrubs to carpet out weeds.
And it is perfect to plant under roses, along an edge, in a decorative container, or to bind a bank.
‘Silver Carpet’ also has a reputation of being amongst the most Sun tolerant of Ajugas, but it is just so handy, bright, and hardy in the shade, where it is perfectly at home. 15cm. high in flower x round carpet to a diameter of approximately 30-50cm.
PURPLE CARPET BUGLE FLOWER - Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’
The word “giant” is the important feature of Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’.
So ‘Catlin’s Giant’ has taller flower spires (20-30cm. approx.), bigger leaves (each can up to 15cm. long), and quickly forms a dense carpet that suppresses weeds and carpets the ground very effectively.
The flowers are rich violet-blue, and glow against the large, glossy, bronze-purple leaves.
Fortunately Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ flowers well in a variety of garden positions, so it is highly prized as a groundcover for broader areas. Particularly in shaded areas where grass fails to thrive. It is an enthusiastic spreader even here.
CHOCOLATE BUGLE BELLS - Ajuga tenorii 'Chocolate Chip'
Dwarf and tightly-knit groundcover, with delightful little chocolate-bronze-purple leaves. Purple-blue flowers complement the foliage perfectly, and also hug close to the ground.
Ideal groundcover for small gardens, containers and hanging baskets. Gorgeous under roses.
