Penstemon ‘Blackbird’
Penstemon ‘Blackbird’ is one of the most reliable and hardy of garden performers.
With a procession of deep burgundy trumpets nodding from strong stems from mid-spring on through summer and autumn.
‘Blackbird’ is also one of the most compact of Penstemons, forming an evergreen mound approx. 60cm High in bloom x 40cm. Wide.
Perfect for small gardens and containers because of its months of bloom, rich colour and hardy constitution, as well as its compact size.
Penstemon ‘Blackbird’ is frost hardy, and drought resistant once established. So, it will still perform creditably with minimal water assistance during dry periods.
Plant in full sun to partial shade positions.
Penstemon ‘Blackbird’ also gives great value and excellent performance in a wide range of soils.
Then with the addition of moderate amounts of fertilizer, compost, and summer mulch ‘Blackbird’ will excel with a constant procession of flower stems.
Penstemons are not thirsty or hungry plants.
Penstemon ‘Blackbird’ is a low maintenance plant, as it only requires a cut-back at the end of autumn to shape it up ready for commencement of blooming next spring.
Deadheading spent stems throughout the blooming season will also encourage even more prolific blooming, but it is not essential work.
Penstemons are rarely if ever troubled by any pests or diseases.
