DAMASK SUPERB PINK
Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’
Blooms of Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ have a wonderful velvety texture.
With beautiful silver spots and dark lace markings, on a deep maroon velvet background.
Flowers are large, single, and upward facing.
So they show their intricate markings beautifully against the silvery foliage mound.
While the fragrance is strong, sweet and spicy.
‘Damask Superb’ is a recently bred “Pink”, but with a very olde-worlde look.
The “Garden Pinks” were also commonly known as “Picotees” or “Gillyflowers” in Grandma’s day.
And ‘Damask Superb’ follows in a grand old tradition, but with modern vigorous health and flower production.
Blooms from Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ make great cut flowers for vases, where they last well, and give intense colour and sweet fragrance.
While the flowers and petals can also be dried and used for sachets, pot-pourri, or eco-friendly confetti. As they hold their colour and fragrance well.
Petals from Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ are also useful in the kitchen.
Where they flavour and colour salads, cakes, drinks and as a garnish.
Dianthus petals are entirely edible.
But to get the sweetest and best flavour, make sure you snip the petals from the flower base, thus removing the more bitter part where the petals join the calyx.
Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ benefits from being cut back hard each year after blooming.
While not essential, this annual hard chop also promotes another flush of blooms and fresh silvery foliage.
Mass plantings of Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ make striking (& tough) groundcover or edges.
They are also excellent pot specimens, and source of excellent cut flowers.
Traditionally Dianthus are used as a companion plant for roses and veggies, and as part of an edible, potager garden.
But ‘Damask Superb’ is particularly suitable for mass planting under roses or along edges, as it makes such a low, compact, densw carpet of foliage, and also flowers so profusely.
These old-fashioned Dianthus ask for little to thrive.
Being tough and easy to grow.
They give their best with sun, minimal water, and thrive in well drained, sandy, gravel, or rocky soils.
However they do appreciate an alkaline soil, so an annual feed with Dolomite lime is beneficial in all but very limestone areas.
The plants are also hardy in frost, heat and are very low maintenance.
Dianthus ‘Damask Superb’ has 35cm. tall flower stems, above a low, dense mound of silvery foliage approx. 30cm. wide.
