Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fasan’
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fasan’ is a spectacular Lace-Cap flowered Hydrangea.
With a large centre of tiny pink flowers, surrounded by a lacy ring of large, sterile rose-red florets.
These huge blooms can be up to 20cm. across.
‘Fasan’ means Pheasant in German, and this Hydrangea really is a showy bird.
The flowers are large, richly coloured, and have a very long blooming season through summer and autumn, and on into winter too.
With wonderful transitions of colour in the blooms through the seasons -becoming deeper and richer as the weather changes. It was originally bred in Switzerland.
The flower colours in Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fasan’ respond to the soil pH.
So the flowers will be very red and pink in alkaline soils, or where you add lime to the soil.
While the blooms will go rich shades of blue and purple in acid soils.
Plant Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fasan’ in a partly shaded position.
So, place under trees where it receives dappled light, or on the east side of a fence where it receives afternoon shade.
However they can tolerate full sun positions if they have consistent moisture available.
Rounded shrub of 1 to 1.6m. High. Deciduous.
Excellent in pots and tolerates coastal gardening. Frost hardy.
