WHITE CREEPING THYME
Thymus serpyllum 'Albus'
Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’, otherwise known as White Creeping Thyme, is ideal for planting between paving stones, on steps and stones, rockeries and spilling down a stone wall. It can take moderate foot traffic on pathways and is a delight as it exudes the fresh herby scent of Thyme whenever it is crushed.
Forms a perfect mat of deep emerald-green leaves all year, and covered in tiny pure white flowers in summer.
GROWING: Thymus serpyllum 'Albus'
Height with flowers: 5cm.
Width: Ground-hugging carpet to 40-60cm. wide approx.
Position: Full Sun. Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ enjoys as much sun, wind, and exposure as you can give it. It loves to bask in the sun. The position must be very well drained and airy. And it loves (and looks great) draping over the edge of a terracotta pot. Thymus ‘Doone Valley’ will die in heavy soils, wet or crowded positions.
Growth: Hardy and long-lived perennial, mat forming Thyme.
Soil: Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ thoroughly enjoys sandy, rocky or gravel soils. It requires excellent drainage and performs best in less fertile soils, and in both alkaline and neutral soil pH.
Frost: Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ is very frost hardy, and can withstand temperatures down to at least -15C, depending on conditions.
Water: Water-wise and low water need plant, ideal for gardeners with limited water supply. Drought tolerant once established.
Pots: Excellent for growing in pots for fragrance and decorative texture. It cascades over the edge as a dense, trailing mat. Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ has a fresh, herbal aroma and is rich in aromatic oils.

Care & Maintenance:
Fertilizer: Quality fertilizer, such as Powerfeed, can be applied in spring and autumn. But use sparingly, as Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ performs best, and has the best aroma, when it is not overfed.
We recommend to water in with Seasol at planting.
Pruning: Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ is a carpeting perennial and naturally grows as a neat and compact mat. It rarely if ever needs pruning.
Pests & Diseases: Rarely troubled by any pests or diseases.
Deer & Rabbit resistant: Happily, both rabbits and deer usually find the strongly aromatic and herbal flavour of Thymus ‘Doone Valley’ not to their taste, and so pass by for tastier fodder.
Herbal, History & Uses
Herbal uses: Thyme has a long history of use as a medicinal herb in traditional and village medicine. It was used for its proposed insect repelling, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
Thymus serpyllum ‘Albus’ is usually only used as a decorative and aromatic mat.
History: Thyme was an essential ingredient for the ancient Egyptians in their art of embalming the dead. It was also an essential for the ancient Romans in their cuisine, brewing and toiletries. Then when the “Black Death” arrived in Europe in the early 1300’s, Thyme posies were considered vital for warding off the infection. At the very least, the Thyme posies must have made everything smell better.
Origin: Thymes are widespread across many areas of the northern hemisphere, from the cold summers of rocky outcrops in Iceland, to the blazing heat of sandy dunes in North Africa. Thyme particularly thrives in areas with a Mediterranean style climate.
