Salvia pratensis ‘Midnight Model’
Newly released Salvia pratensis ‘Midnight Model’ is the bee’s-knees in blue Salvias.
Hailed as probably the best blue Salvia in the garden now.
Salvia pratensis ‘Midnight Model’ has big, fat bouncing blooms of deepest violet-blue.
‘Midnight Model’ blooms so profusely it turns into a ball of blue over spring and early summer.
With the flowers densely packed on large, plump spikes.
‘Midnight Model’ is a neat, compact, hardy growing perennial plant, with a dazzling flowering and a tough constitution.
Plant in full sun, though it will also tolerate a little part-shade, providing it is not too wet.
‘Midnight Model’ is not a water guzzler, surviving some periods of dry, and thriving on average garden watering.
So, Salvia pratensis ‘Midnight Model’ is an easy plant to grow.
Being resistant to sun, heat, wind, rabbits and deer.
Both the foliage and flowers are pleasantly aromatic, but the essential oils spoil the taste for the fiendish rabbits and deer.
It is also tolerant of some salt in the air or soil – so is ideal for coastal planting.
However, bees and native honey-eater birds adore foraging amongst the abundant and nectar-rich flowers.
So it is excellent for your bio and garden health.
Salvia pratensis ‘Midnight Model’ is a low maintenance, permanent plant.
Just cut it back hard after flowering to promote another flush of blooms.
It does not require large amounts of fertilizing.
Just water in well with a seaweed / fish-based product at planting; and feed with a general garden fertilizer in the spring when you do the roses.
‘Midnight Model’ will fit into any garden design – native or exotic - formal or informal – with its naturally neat, compact growth; vivid colour; and abundant blooming, teamed with low maintenance.
